Harnessing Nature: The Benefits of Sunlight, Grounding, and Circadian biology at PJ Performance Training

Updated: Feb 22

In the modern world, it's easy to become disconnected from nature. At PJ Performance Training, we emphasize the importance of reconnecting with the natural world through our fifth pillar, sunlight, grounding, and circadian biology optimization. This approach not only enhances physical health but also supports mental wellness, making it a vital component of our training philosophy.

The Power of Sunlight, Grounding, and Circadian Biology Optimization

Exposure to natural elements like sunlight and the earth's surface can have profound effects on your health and well-being. Here's why incorporating nature into your routine is essential:

  1. Vitamin D Synthesis: Sunlight is a primary source of vitamin D (which is actually a hormone) and is crucial for immune function, bone and organ health, and mood regulation.

  2. Mood Enhancement: Natural light exposure increases serotonin levels, improving mood and reducing the risk of depression.

  3. Circadian Rhythm Regulation: Sunlight helps regulate your body's internal clock, promoting better sleep patterns and overall energy levels. Viewing sunrise and sunset regularly aligns our circadian clock with nature which has profound impacts on health and longevity.

  4. Inflammation Reduction: Grounding, or direct contact with the earth's natural surface, has been shown to reduce inflammation and improve blood viscosity and circulation, promoting overall well-being.

  5. Enhanced Recovery: Improving your circadian biology aids in muscle and joint recovery and supporting overall physical and mental performance.

How to optimize your circadian biology:

  1. Spend Time Outdoors: Aim to spend MINIMUM 30 minutes outside each day, whether it's during a walk, workout, or simply relaxing in the sun. The more outdoors time the better.

  2. Morning and Evening light in your eyes and on your skin: View the sunrise and sunset as consistently as possible or as close as you can get to it. This is the most powerful way to align your circadian clock which is intricately connected with our physical and mental health.

  3. Mindful Sun Exposure: While sunlight is extremely beneficial, it's important to protect your skin from burning. Be mindful while building up your body's capacity to tolerate higher amounts of sun exposure. Utilize shade, clothing, or natural zinc-oxide sunscreen as needed (avoid chemical sunscreen)

  4. Optimize Your Environment: If spending time outdoors isn't always possible, try to bring elements of nature indoors, such as houseplants or natural light exposure through windows.

  5. Practice Grounding: Walk barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil to get the benefits of grounding while simultaneously strengthening your feet and ankles.

  6. Combine with Other Activities: Integrate sunlight and grounding with other wellness practices, like meditation, breathework, or exercise to enhance their benefits.
